Energy poverty during end of life is an important but under-researched topic. People receiving end of life care are likely to have additional energy requirements for heating, washing and medical equipment at the same time as facing financial constraints. Although commonly associated with older people, people of any age can find themselves in this situation.
Dr Elaine Robinson presented findings from a recent groundbreaking analysis of people experiencing fuel poverty at end of life and considering the potential and implications of a social tariff, funded by Marie Curie (Elaine’s Slides – pdf). Jamie Thunder, Senior Policy Manager for Financial Security at Marie Curie, put this in the context the charity’s work and reflected on the policy changes needed to reduce deaths in fuel poverty (Jamie’s Slides – pdf). Sarah Owens reflected on the research in the context of her experience as a nurse and academic.
